Highway Cleanup

Highway Cleanup Dates:

Saturday, May 10th, 2008
Saturday, September 13th, 2008

The Bonneville Democrats adopted the section of Interstate 15 between the Broadway and Airport exits. It is our responsibility to keep the trash picked up along this section of road twice a year.

We meet at the home of Sandy and Merrick Brow, where we review safety tips and litter pickup guidelines. Then we carpool to I-15 and walk along the highway picking up trash. The Idaho Transportation Department provides vests and trash bag; we recommend you bring some heavy gloves, warm clothing, and sun screen. Carrie Crom lends us sticks with nails in the ends, very useful. We walk about two or three miles, most of us on the east side of the freeway, because the wind blows most of the trash that way. A relief vehicle provides a lift for those who need a rest, water for everyone, and spare bags. After a few hours of exhilarating outdoor exercise, with an informal contest to see who can find the most exciting treasure, we return to Sandy and Merrick's home to share a potluck lunch. It's fun, it helps the community, and it provides good, healthy exercise.

WHERE: Meet at the Brows', 2269 Calkins Avenue, Idaho Falls
WHEN: 9:30 a.m., May 10th, and September 13th
